Flag Football

INTRODUCTION
The Portales City Sport league is designed to teach children the fundamentals of football at an earlier age than what is allowed for the Tackle Football league. Games are played at Rotary Park. The season occurs from August to October.

The purpose of this league is to provide football sports programming opportunities to citizens PreK, kindergarten through 2nd grade (boys) and 3rd grade (girls). Games are two 20 minute halves. There is no score kept during regular league games with the exception of the tournament at end of season. The rule system follows that of NFL Flag Football. The field is similar to the tackle football field. Teams have three downs to pass mid field, then three more downs to score. There is a no rushing zone located 5 yards before mid-field and 5 yards before each goal line. If a team has to start a play inside of the 5 yard "no rush zone" that play must be a passing play. No handing off or passing behind the line of scrimmage. Teams consist of 10 players each with only 5 on the field at a time. At the end of the season, a 1 day tournament is held to determine the league champion. Participants are taught the following fundamentals of the game:

  • Transitions between Offense and Defense
  • System of Downs
  • Basic Football Drills and Mechanics.
