INTRODUCTION
The Portales City Sports league is designed to teach children the fundamentals of soccer. The program consists of three co-ed leagues: Pee Wee, Junior, and Senior. The fields are modified to fit the age groups and the team numbers. The season occurs from September to November. Each team plays a double header every Saturday.
Each league has a specific group of skill development goals created based on a collaboration from local college and high school coaches.
Mighty Mites and Pee Wee League (PreK, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd grades): Teams play 5 vs. 5 with no goal keeper. The field is 40 yards long by 20 yards wide. No score is kept in this league. The focus is fun and skill development. Substituting is open. Games are two 15 minute halves. Participants are taught the following fundamentals of the game:
Junior League (3rd, 4th, 5th grades): Teams play 6 vs. 6 with a goal keeper. The field is 50 yards long by 25 yards wide. This is the experimental league where every player gets a chance to play all positions. Substituting is open. Games are two 15 minute halves. Participants are taught the following skills:
Senior League (6th, 7th, 8th grades): Teams play 6 vs. 6 with a goal keeper. The field is 60 yards long by 30 yards wide. This is the most competitive league. Substituting is soccer style meaning once a player comes out of the game, they cannot return to the game. Games are two 20 minute halves. Participants are taught the following skills:
