How to Apply

PREPARING YOUR APPLICATION:
Applications will only be accepted when there is a posted vacancy. Applications must be made for a specific position. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of applications except as may be specifically noted in the posting. A separate application form must be completed for each position for which you are applying. The application form must be filled out completely and submitted to Human Resources.

APPLICATIONS WITHOUT THE "POSITION APPLYING FOR" NOTED WILL BE CONSIDERED INCOMPLETE AND WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Applications may be submitted on-line, mailed or dropped off with any supporting documentation to the Recruitment Coordinator, 100 W. First Street, Portales, NM 88130. REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS:
After the position posting period closes, all applications will be rated and a list of eligible applicants will be prepared. For Police Officer applications, the rating includes a background check performed by the Police Department. Only those applicants who successfully complete this section will be notified.

SELECTION OF CANDIDATES FOR INTERVIEW:
Because of the numerous applications for a single position, time does not permit an interview of each candidate for the position. Applications will be reviewed to determine if minimum qualifications of the position are met. Only those applicants chosen by the selection official(s) will be called for an interview.
 
If you make that list, you will be contacted for a personal interview. Leave a phone number where you can be reached or at least receive messages. If you do not return our call in a timely manner, you will be disqualified from the interview list.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE INTERVIEW:

After the interview, the panel will make a recommendation as to the chosen applicant. If you are that applicant, the HR Department will contact you and inform you of the job offer.
 
Job offers are contingent upon successfully passing a physical exam, drug and alcohol screen, and a background check. If you are not selected after the interview, you will be notified by mail.
 
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE REST OF THE APPLICATIONS:
Once a vacancy has been filled, all applications become inactive in most cases. Inactive applications will receive no further consideration. Applications and attachments become official property of the City of Portales and cannot be returned, reused or copied after being submitted.
