In 1988, the Portales Airport was built with one runway (1-19). Later in 1990 a crosswind runway was built (8-26). Between 1990 and 1998, an air show was held at the airport. In addition a parachute club utilized the facilities. The airport operated with 3 full-time employees and 1 part-time employee between 1995 and 2002.

In 1999, the Portales Airport Expo took place. Since September 11, 2001, no air shows or fly-ins have occurred.

In 2001, the Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) was built and brought online.

Between 2002-2009, the airport has installed a new automated fuel system, paved the geo access road,  and constructed a new snow removal equipment building.

In 2008, Airport Director Mike Parkey was named "Airport Manager of the Year" by the New Mexico Department of Transportation Aviation Division.
