The City of Portales uses American Signal Corporation Tempest Series sirens. These sirens rotate 360 degrees and send out tones that can travel up to 1.5 miles in the direction they are pointed. These sirens offer flexibility and coverage to the City of Portales as an early warning to severe weather events such as a pending tornado.
The City of Portales does weekly siren tests on Wednesday at 12 noon. The test will last no longer than three minutes.
A real event would result in the sirens being activated for no less than fifteen minutes.
The Tempest 128 sirens are activated from the local emergency services center and have battery backup power should utilities be offline when needed.
